solid solutions for successful hatching egg production
Broiler breeders have very specific needs regarding barn equipment and feeding technology. Animals raised for fattening are genetically prepared for weight gain, not for high egg production. This means that hens and roosters must not gain too much weight, in order to achieve high and regular laying rates throughout the laying period, as well as high fertilization rates.
The barn equipment (feeding, drinkers, nest, manure pit) and its optimal distribution are decisive in the successful production of hatching eggs.
The following points are especially important:
- suitable feeding concept
- easy access to the nest
- sufficient freedom of movement
- optimal size and height of manure pit
- short rolling distances for the eggs
- gentle egg transport
- use of quality materials for optimal hygiene
Depending on the selected components – chain or pan feeding, individual or communal laying nest – there are different barn concepts that have proven their practical effectiveness.
Central placement of nest and manure pit
In Europe, a widespread concept for broiler breeders is the placement of nest and manure pit in the center of the barn. The drinker lines are above the manure pit, about 60 cm in front of each side of the nest.
To the left and right of the manure pit, chain feeding circuits are installed either suspended or supported on legs. Depending on the width of the barn, there may be another circuit over the manure pit. The independent feeding for roosters must be located on the longitudinal sides of the barn.
Lateral placement of nest and manure pit
Both in North and South America and in Asia, a widespread concept is the placement of nest and manure pit on both longitudinal sides of the barn.
Above the manure pit are a drinker line and chain or pan feeding circuits, suspended or standing. The independent feeding for roosters is in the center, on the litter.
Manual collection nest without manure pit
An alternative, especially for smaller barns, are the manual collection nests without a manure pit. The nipple drinkers and chain feeding circuits (suspended or standing) are placed on the sides of the barn.
If independent feeding for roosters is used, it can be placed centrally between the two rows of nests. The transport cart for the hatching eggs also runs there.
